Hardware required for In The 1st Degree (full product):
• Color Macintosh (68030/25 MHz or better) or PowerMac
• 640 x 480, Thousands of colors (recommended) or 256 color modes
• System 7.0.1 or higher
• 8 MB RAM
• Double-speed CD-ROM drive or faster
• 3.5 MB of hard disk space
• QuickTime™ 2.0 or higher and Sound Manager 3.0 or higher
(both included with the product)
• QuickTime Power Plug installed (for PowerPC only)
To install QuickTime from this disc: Drag the QuickTime file to your System folder. Then restart your system.
To run the demo: Double-click on the In The 1st Degree Demo icon.
NOTE: We recommend you run this demo in thousands of colors if your system supports this mode. Resetting to thousands of colors mode will ensure optimal viewing of QuickTime movies.
Depending on your set-up, some of the QuickTime movies in this demo may playback in a choppy manner on some low end machines. Please read further for information on how to optimize playback of this demo.
Things to try if you experience poor performance:
• If your machine supports Thousands of colors, go into the Monitors Control Panel and set it to Thousands (16-bit color). The QuickTime movies in this demo are optimized for 16-bit color playback so this may help with performance.
• Another way to increase performance is to quit any other applications that are running in the background; this includes Control Panels.
• A good formula for determining what your Disk Cache (located in the Memory Control Panel) should be set to is: 32K x 1 MB RAM. For example, if you have a 1 MB Macintosh, the Disk Cache should be set to 32K; if you have an 8 MB Macintosh, the Disk Cache should be set to 256K.
• The loading of many System Extensions and Control Panels may cause a degradation of System performance. To relieve this problem, only load the System Extensions and Control Panels which are necessary to run the demo. You may want to use this as a last resort, since this can be a rather time consuming process.
• If you are running with Virtual Memory turned on, some machines may experience degraded performance on subsequent launchings of the demo. To alleviate this problem, restart your Mac.
If you are using a PowerPC:
• Try turning Virtual Memory on. You can find Virtual Memory in the Memory Control Panel. After turning Virtual Memory on, restart your Macintosh. If you still encounter performance problems, try increasing the Virtual Memory size. We suggest you try increasing the virtual memory to double the system memory.
If you are using a PowerBook:
• Try viewing the demo on an external monitor.
NOTE: If you are using virtual memory, you may experience performance problems with the demo if you run it, stop it, and then attempt to run it a second time. These problems are a result of segmentation of virtual memory and can be alleviated by restarting your Macintosh.
